Storybook Advent Calendar
An Introduction to World Literature
If your child is age three and above, he or she will love
the Storybook Advent Calendar!
A few of the
stories like the excerpt from Sir Walter Scott's Marmion
will be challenging to younger readers because it
has a lot of pirate talk in it. Of course, this is one
reason they will love it, especially boys!
'
Aye Matey!
It's a pirate's Christmas
yarn to be sure!
Courtesy of the legendary
Sir Walter Scott |
|
Hint:
Marmion's story is contained in a poem; it has a
wonderful tempo all children will love. Plus you can
interject a pirate's voice and cackling for cheer.
Consider it a tongue twister for dad! There are also
favorites from your childhood like excepts from Dicken's
A Christmas Carol, the author of Little Women,
Louisa May Alcott's The Christmas Spirit and Hans
Christian Anderson's beloved 'The Little Match Seller'.

Why don't
Christians celebrate Hanukkah or Eid al-Adha
when both of these holidays mark events
in the Old Testament?
Surprisingly
few people seem to be able to answer
this question, including pastors! Four
years ago I had a conversation with a
celebrity pastor. He was shocked when I
explained only Christianity has the
trinity. He didn't realize that.
He thought Judaism also had the trinity.
Now I was shocked!
If a man who
ministers to millions on television
didn't know something that basic, I can
bet a lot of Christians remain unaware
of this central differentiator.
And that's not all. Most Christians will
give you a blank stare when you ask why
we don't celebrate Hanukkah or Eid
al-Adha, (there is actually a very good
reason Christians don't celebrate
either).
The Amazing
Trinity
When I've
traveled, questions about the trinity
are always the top query from Muslims
and persons outside the faith. Most
don't understand the trinity or why
Christians consider ourselves
monotheistic yet 'pray' to three
entities. How do you explain the Father,
Son and Holy Ghost in a manner people
outside the faith can relate to? Or in
the case of the above celebrity pastor,
why we have three and the other faiths
of the book don't? This story tells you
how!
|
|
|
You'll
be pleasantly surprised at the answers
to the above questions and intrigued by the traditions others
celebrate at this time of the year. It's
an interesting peek into our shared
heritage as well as how we differ from
our sister faiths. Upon reading
the story not only will you gain wisdom
and understanding, you will
appreciate Christianity even more.
Matthew, Mohammed and Micah
is the only story in the book we
recommend for children eight and older.
For children under eight we've included
the alternate story by the author of
The Wizard of Oz, L Frank Baum:
The First Journey with Reindeer.
|
|
|
The age suggested for
Matthew, Mohammed and Micah
has more to do with the fact that
most children under eight haven't been
exposed to other faiths and they're just
learning their own. Introducing the
traditions celebrated by Judaism and
Islam at this stage could confuse them and they won't
understand what it's about.
By eight,
most children realize other faiths exist
and their natural curiosity will quickly
make this a favorite story.
It will also put them
leaps ahead of their peers in
understanding not only Christianity, but how and why other people celebrate
differently in addition to pointing out the common ground and beliefs we share.

Thomas & the Christmas Orange, an original
story
is a favorite of parents
and children.

“The
Storybook Advent Calendar reminds adults
and teaches children the roots of the
holiday. Stories flow with a wonderful
mix of new and old.
From
classics like The Matchstick Girl to
timeless treasures such as The Three
Trees, this collection will promote
important conversations between parents
and children.... including
the addition of an original story teaching how the
Christian, Muslim and Jewish faiths relate to each other
and have more in common than not.

Having Fun
with Reading
Christmas embraces
happiness, wonder and excitement so
reading Christmas stories should be too,
we decided. To that end, we've included
onomonopia words,
(say that three times fast!)
in some of the stories created for this book to make it
more animated when reading aloud. What's an
onomonopia
word? 'Crash!', 'Boom!', 'Crackle!' and 'Bam!'...they're
words that make sounds. This will give you the
opportunity as an adult to have some fun with your
reading.
An oasis from consumerism
Disney and Pixar
showed you can create stories that inspire children AND
entertain adults. Think about Toy Story, Shrek,
Cars or Beauty and the Beast;
these are films that loved by adults and
children alike.
When Michael and I
were creating this book, we decided we wanted something
parents would get excited about too. Something
that with each new story you'd learn something new.
Dick and Jane was not an option!

This
wild adventure is brought to you by the author
of The Wizard of Oz! |
Thank you for bringing me back to Christmas. It
is possible to back away from the commercial tidal
wave and rest in the peace that is the true meaning
of the gift we have been given."

Looking at the types
of stories parents and children would enjoy, we've assembled a collection of stories you will
enjoy as much as your children. In the
footnotes to each story you'll find facts about the
authors including some of their best known works.

Milton's timeless poem about Jesus' first day is
lovingly illustrated in this picture. |

And Shhhh!
Nobody but you needs to know
you're teaching your children about great Christian literature in
addition to celebrating the holidays and being inspired
by your faith!
Reading the Book
There are three
ways to read this book.
-
You can have it up on a
screen, be it your television or a computer monitor.
-
You can purchase this through
Amazon and use a Kindle, which isn't recommended.
Kindle doesn't reproduce pictures well and to our
knowledge, doesn't publish e-books in color yet.
|
|
3. Or, you can do what most
people do as the book is delivered in a PDF format.
Simply print it out on your home computer's printer.
If you live in an apartment complex with a business
center, use their printer. It's usually free!
You can also e-mail your book
to two other people. This way Grandma can share a
story some nights a week, or a favorite aunt or
uncle. Storybook Advent Calendar is wonderful
way to bring your family together each night of the
holidays and keep the focus on what's important.
To facilitate this, we've programmed
each book's security settings so you can share it with family members who
aren't at home. Now being away for the holidays
doesn't mean you can't share its traditions.
Storybook Advent Calendar allows you to be there
even if you're not!

Military Parents
Parents who've been deployed overseas
absolutely love this. Their
children can read the printed version at
home and they can be reading to them on
the computer over the phone or through
services like Skype that allow video as
well.
Keeping the book in a digital form makes
it much easier to lug around and it
doesn't weigh down your luggage!
Soldiers really appreciate the
opportunity to read with their children.
A digital book makes this possible and
it gives soldiers a much needed taste of
home during the holidays. Typically the
parent stateside will purchase Storybook
Advent, print a copy out for the
children and e-mail the book to dad or
mom overseas. |
|

How do you explain
to a 5-year old what God is? 1 Cor 13! |

Calendar a regular book, simply print
it out on your home printer or have it printed at Staples, Kinkos or another office service store. Then keep it in a three

The Storybook Advent
Christmas Carols Collections
preview Volume One), (Volume
Two)
What would the season of Advent
be without Christmas Carols?
Music has always been an
essential element in Christianity and Storybook
Advent Calendar includes two fabulous albums you can purchase
separately, or with the book.
Nestled in the back of Storybook Advent
Calendar
you'll find the words and history of the 20 classic carols
featured on the Storybook Advent Carols
Collection Volume One. These beloved American versions. (how they are played in the US)
include all-time favorite carols Jingle
Bells, Greensleeves, Oh Holy Night and seventeen
others. The music albums are piano
instrumentals. This allows you to take them along
with you for caroling, use them for background music
at a party, in your store or have your own sing-a-long with the
book.
"I
saved the music, lyrics and CD covers to my desktop. I
think you did a really great job with this. They are
awesome! I also read the Memo: from God. Wow – nicely
done and very uplifting."
--John Day,
Greek Orthodox, Los Angeles, California USA

In the song book
you'll discover the Christian meaning behind each of
the Twelve Days of Christmas. Did you
know 'A Partridge in a Pear Tree'
signifies God? Or that the 'Two
Turtle Doves' are the Old and New
Testaments? Now you do! That's
just a taste of what you'll learn
discovering the heritage of your
favorite songs.
Which song was
actually written for Thanksgiving...that too you
will learn. The answer will
surprise you!
For 2009 we created a second album with
the classic renditions of the British
Christmas Carols. |
|
Many of these will be new to
you and therefore will add to your Christmas music
collection by introducing songs you haven't
heard...or worse, grown tired of. We did reverse the
O Little Town of Bethlehem versions on the two
albums just to mix it up. On the American
album, volume one, you'll find the British version
of this classic. On the British album, volume
two, you'll discover the American version. No,
it's not a mistake. We simply liked the mix
better!
"Just gone through carols and they are great,--simplicity at its
best. All that is needed for a sing along to bring out the
spirit of Christmas cheer. Well done to all involved."
Jeremy Allard,
Anglican,
Lyricist, London, England Both albums make
fabulous atmospheric music, dinner music, relaxation
music, or a breath of fresh air when 'Grandma Got Run
Over by a Reindeer' starts to get on your nerves!
